China's First Industrial-Scale Hydrogen Blending Test Platform Commissioned in Zhangjiagang

A comprehensive industrial-scale test and verification platform for hydrogen blending in natural gas combustion, jointly developed by Towngas and Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy Equipment Co., Ltd., has been commissioned at Guofu Hydrogen Energy’s base in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province.

The facility is designed to support testing and verification across a wide range of hydrogen blending ratios. It has also been included among the key projects for 2026 under the Jiangsu Riverside and Coastal Hydrogen Industry Innovation and Collaborative Development Pilot, one of China’s first regional hydrogen pilot programmes announced by the National Energy Administration.

The platform aims to expand hydrogen applications and create new outlets for green hydrogen consumption, while exploring ways to integrate hydrogen into natural gas systems and scale up its use in the gas industry.

As China advances its hydrogen industry through large-scale demonstrations, blending hydrogen into natural gas offers a pathway to connect conventional energy systems with green hydrogen and support the transition to lower-carbon energy.

The platform establishes an integrated process linking renewable electricity-powered hydrogen production, hydrogen blending with natural gas, and combustion testing in industrial equipment. It is expected to build a systematic database on hydrogen-blended combustion, providing technical assessment benchmarks, pricing references and solutions to common challenges facing the gas industry’s decarbonisation efforts.

The facility is intended to provide practical evidence and technical support for the wider commercial adoption of hydrogen energy.

Towngas and Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy Equipment Co., Ltd. plan to continue their collaboration on key technologies and further explore the emissions-reduction potential of hydrogen-blended natural gas, supporting China’s transition towards a greener energy mix during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030).
