On 1 October, workers at the Jilin Tianying New Energy project site in Liaoyuan continued equipment installation and commissioning during China’s National Day holiday. More than 2,000 workers were on site around the clock to accelerate commissioning of the hydrogen-production facilities and spherical hydrogen storage tanks, as well as instrumentation wiring and electrical tests, according to Fu Hui, deputy general manager of Jilin Tianying New Energy Co., Ltd.

Phase I includes four hydrogen-production lines, which are currently undergoing commissioning in parallel. The hydrogen-production workshop has completed integrated commissioning and successfully produced hydrogen. Wind turbines at the No. 1 step-up substation have also been connected to the grid, and the green-power transmission line is in place.

The Liaoyuan Green Methanol Project is China Tianying’s first hydrogen-based green-energy project. Construction began in April 2024. The overall project is planned to include 2.639 GW of installed wind and solar capacity, with annual production targets of 150,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 800,000 tonnes of green methanol.

Phase I is designed for hydrogen production capacity of 48,000 Nm³/h and annual green methanol output of 170,000 tonnes. It uses a production route combining green hydrogen with biomass-derived CO₂. The project was designed by PetroChina Jilin Chemical Engineering Institute and uses green methanol synthesis technology from Iceland-based Carbon Recycling International (CRI).
