Sakhalin State University has completed trials of a prototype uncrewed hydrogen-powered vessel developed under Russia’s federal Priority 2030 programme, according to the press service of the Sakhalin Oblast government.

The prototype was tested on 12 September 2026 in the harbour basin at Starodubskoye, a settlement in Sakhalin Oblast. The project was carried out through the university’s Advanced Engineering School for Island Engineering as part of the Priority 2030 initiative.
The vessel is being developed for specialised missions, including scientific research and cargo transport.
“We are laying the groundwork for a new industry: hydrogen-powered shipbuilding and uncrewed maritime logistics. Projects like this help build the specialist expertise needed in the Russian Far East and the Arctic,” said Alexey Ognev, acting rector of Sakhalin State University. “I believe our prototype will provide a basis for serial-production solutions, and Sakhalin will become a centre of expertise in this field.”
During the trials, engineers assessed the vessel’s buoyancy and stability, its draught under specified loading conditions, the performance of its remote-control system, manoeuvrability and battery endurance. The tests confirmed that all key onboard components were operational.
