Liaoyuan Rolls Out "Hydrogen Source" Hydrogen-Powered Tourist Trains

LIAOYUAN, China, August 17 — Liaoyuan’s “Hydrogen Source” hydrogen-powered tourist trains were officially rolled out at CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd., marking a new milestone in industrial cooperation between Changchun and Liaoyuan and in green development cooperation between central state-owned enterprises and local governments.

Gao Fei, Deputy Party Secretary and Mayor of Liaoyuan; Liu Changqing, Party Secretary and Chairman of CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles; and Sun Huiyong, Party Secretary and Chairman of Changchun Rail Transit Group, attended the rollout ceremony.

In his remarks, Gao said that with support from CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles, local companies including Qixing Aluminum and Liyuan Precision have joined the rail transit supply chain, contributing to local industrial development and upgrading.

He said the newly delivered “Hydrogen Source” trains represent a major outcome of cooperation in the development of the “green hydrogen+” industry. The project is expected to help revitalize industrial heritage sites in Liaoyuan’s former mining areas while supporting the integration of hydrogen  with the cultural and tourism sectors.

Since the project was launched, CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles has provided technical support and engineering expertise, while Changchun Rail Transit Group has contributed experience in train driver training and operational management.

Liaoyuan plans to operate the “Hydrogen Source” tourist rail service and develop it as a demonstration project for the use of green transportation in cultural and tourism development. The city also plans to deepen cooperation with CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles and Changchun Rail Transit Group in areas including green hydrogen and rail transit-related industries.

Liu Changqing said the two “Hydrogen Source” trains represent CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles’ hydrogen-powered rail transit products and are the result of strengthened cooperation between the company, Liaoyuan and Changchun Rail Transit Group.

He said CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles will continue to focus on customer needs and provide hydrogen-powered trains and related services as Liaoyuan develops its hydrogen-powered tourist rail network.

During the ceremony, Gao Fei and Liu Changqing completed a symbolic handover of a golden key, officially marking the rollout of the “Hydrogen Source” trains.

The “Hydrogen Source” hydrogen-powered urban-regional train is described as the world’s first hydrogen-powered urban-regional train with fully proprietary intellectual property rights. It has a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h. The project also includes a retro-styled hydrogen-powered tram designed to highlight Liaoyuan’s industrial heritage and low-carbon development.

The project is part of Liaoyuan’s efforts to implement Jilin Province’s hydrogen industry development strategy. The city is leveraging its green hydrogen resources and railway infrastructure to develop hydrogen-powered cultural and tourism services.

The project includes the procurement of hydrogen-powered trains, renovation of existing railway infrastructure, and construction of platforms and supporting facilities. The planned tourist route will integrate sightseeing, cultural displays and onboard dining, while promoting closer integration between hydrogen , tourism and urban services.
