SHANGHAI — From August 15th to 16th, Shanghai Port completed the world's largest single green methanol bunkering operation at the South Lvhuashan Anchorage. The methanol bunkering vessel Hai Gang Zhi Yuan delivered 8,016 tonnes of domestically produced green methanol to the CMA CGM OSMIUM, a 13,000-TEU bio-methanol dual-fuel container ship owned by CMA CGM Group. On August 17th, Shanghai Electric Group, SIPG (Shanghai International Port Group), and CMA CGM jointly announced the completion of the operation, officially stating a bunkering volume of 8,000 tonnes—setting a new global record for the largest single green methanol refueling.

The CMA CGM OSMIUM serves the M2X route connecting Asia and Mexico. On March 5th, 2026, the vessel completed its maiden bunkering of 3,643 tonnes of Chinese green methanol at the Shengdong Terminal in Shanghai's Yangshan Port, making this operation its second refueling at Shanghai Port. Since completing China's first green methanol bunkering operation in April 2024, Shanghai Port achieved a cumulative bunkering volume of 36,000 tonnes, leading major global ports; in the first half of 2026 alone, its bunkering volume reached 51,000 tonnes.

The green methanol for this operation was primarily supplied by Shanghai Electric's Taonan project in Jilin Province. Leveraging local wind, solar, and corn straw resources, the project utilizes proprietary core technologies to establish an integrated "Green Power – Green Hydrogen – Biomass – Green Methanol" framework. Commissioned in July 2025 with an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes, it is among the National Energy Administration's first pilot projects for green liquid fuel technology development and commercialization, as well as China's first project coupling green hydrogen production with biomass gasification for green methanol synthesis.

To facilitate logistics, Shanghai, Jilin, and Liaoning launched a joint initiative in June 2026 to build the national-level green fuel transport corridor, creating a supply chain structured around "Production in Taonan (Jilin), Storage and Transit at Dalian Port(Liaoning), and Bunkering at Shanghai Port." Shanghai Port has established a dual-fuel bunkering framework capable of handling both LNG and green methanol simultaneously.

Shanghai Electric's Taonan project has already earned EU ISCC certification. Its Phase II project has officially commenced, with planned annual capacities of 200,000 tonnes of green methanol and 10,000 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), led by a RMB 495 million investment from the National Green Development Fund.
